Yes, and it’s not actually their first airplane, either. I kinda like them mixing it up with boats and airplanes, the wheel thing is pretty meh to me.

Take the wings off and it will be fine...
Or just go with it:

I want to say that 99+% of the wheels on BaT are Porsche wheels.

That’s exactly why they do wheels haha. They have to put next to no time into them and still make that money.

this gives me a great idea for a blipshift shirt, have a USPS Mailtruck drifting around and below it has “Just send it” with a little envelop. a better artist than i could probably take that idea and run with it

I love these old airplanes. My grandpa rebuilt a Aeronca Chief from a bare fuselage when I was a kid. I’m surprised he didn’t get cancer from working with the resin to harden the cloth. Even though they only do about 60 mph, it feels like twice that because of the vibrations and being able to push on the flimsy cloth doors and see the ground below. I still vividly remember thinking it was going to roll forward and chop him up from hand-cranking to start it. The only thing stopping them from moving is chocks on the wheels.

LLV or DJ?

LLV for sure. Blipshift sells a lot to a group who probably wouldn’t know what a DJ-5 even is.

Hmm, for $425k do you buy that or the F-86 that For Sweden posted the other day?
I’d go F-86 personally.

They are both pretty iconic, but yeah maybe not so much to that coveted 18-25 demographic (even at 36 I’m probably on the tail end of people who remember the old Jeeps, I’m not sure my little brother would).

That’s awesome! I’ve been in more than a few small airplanes, but nothing that old. It’s a completely different world from a commercial jet.
Here are some old airplanes - includes a Taylorcraft and a Cub, though no Aeroncas:

This is the best kind of airplane. The ones where the windows open and you say “ahhhh” and not “AHHHHHH!!!”
Aeroncas are also pretty great with learning aerobatics from what I’ve heard.
I’ve been in a Stearman and a couple Cubs, but that’s as close as I’ve gotten.

Those are great pictures! You can see a lot of the same styling cues that car designers used in those old planes. Many of those biplanes are beyond beautiful. I spent some time in one of these weird little planes too. Some Bonaza’s as well but those aren’t as exciting outside of the V tail.

I lived in the country for a bit. I’m 26 and I swear we had a DJ-5 delivering mail during the first couple years of my life.

Thanks! Nice Ercoupe.
My time is limited to typical Cessna and Pipers. Still fun but would love to go up in an open aircraft to feel the breeze.

I’ve never flown one, but I’m sure they are — if they weren’t, American Champion wouldn’t still be making them

Flying a 172 with the windows open is the closest I’ve come. Best way to do pattern work at a non towered airport on a hot day.

Yep, I spent a good bit of my infancy in a 172, but mostly Pipers.
Many years later, my dad was actually the head of sales, marketing, and service for Cessna’s US piston operations as they opened the new 172 plant in Kansas (around the year 1998 or 99 when production started back up). He only stayed a few years because rural Kansas takes some getting used to...I was in college in AL at the time, so it didn’t bother me personally ;)

That’s pretty cool! That’s around when I started flying (June ‘99) - coincidentally, in new C172R’s. Hopefully he would fly you back and forth to college!

If only...he was so busy at the time, plus he wasn’t current (he’s back to being a CFI now at age 70), so it was easier and cheaper to just hop on a Dash 8 or CRJ and go see them.
But prior to that era, I basically spent my whole childhood in Pipers (where he worked for 20+ years). Everything from Cubs to the amazing Cheyenne 400. My old man still holds a 1986 transatlantic turboprop speed record in it.

The Cheyennes are pretty rare - - I flew out of a busy airport (Palwaukee, near O’Hare) and I think there was only 1 or maybe 2 based there.
I flew Warriors and Archers a fair bit, too - got my instrument rating in an Warrior, actually. I always thought the Saratoga and Malibu were nice, but was never in one.

The flying club my dad belongs to now has a couple of early 80s Archers with decent avionics upgrades. They’re holding up well and do a good job for both training and short-range cross country work.
They’ve got so many members now, they’re looking at a third plane now.
Pretty good deal — you buy into the club (a few thousand dollars) then it’s about $90/hr including everything. And it’s based on tach hours, so if you’re at low RPM, you can fly for 4 hours and pay for 3. Magic!
